Our Society was established on 4 Feb 2012 and I am honoured to be elected as the 3rd President of the Society for the term in 2014/15 in the recent AGM on 18th February. Much was done by the past two executive committees under the leadership of Presidents Alex and Elizabeth for the first and second year respectively. My executive committee and I will continue to build upon the foundation laid by them to bring our Society forward as much as we can with the support and participation of members.
Singapore has liberalised its legal services industry which include issuing licences for foreign firms to practice Singapore Law, as well as providing avenues for Singapore law firms access to the international market such as international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution services. Legal services in Singapore has grown beyond domestic demand.
In AUSLSS, we seize the opportunities to learn and to be prepared for the challenges ahead and for career opportunities in Singapore while pursuing our law studies in Australia. To facilitate and sustain the success of this learning experience beyond our law education in Australia, our executive committee will reach out to various Sponsors, Partners and Affiliates to serve the wide ranging needs of our members from academic pursuits to career prospects. It is our vision to ensure that AUSLSS is relevant and valuable to our Sponsors, Partners and Affiliates, and that our members are well-equipped for the legal profession in Singapore. We urge all Singaporean law students studying in Australia to register as a member of AUSLSS – there is much to gain from your active participation in the Society and by simply being connected to us.
We are thankful to ContactSG for their support and sponsorship in the past two years. We will continue to work with them and other relevant organizations to serve our interests as law students in Australia as well as being Singaporeans who would like to contribute to the development of the legal profession in Singapore. We would like our universities in Australia to be proud of AUSLSS and be part of our Society to encourage more Singaporeans to study law in Australia.
I am privileged to have a team of committed members elected into the executive committee to serve AUSLSS. They are VP Paul, Secretary Meryl and Treasurer Giselle. The Committee has already started working on some initiatives and we are excited for what is in store! We look forward to greater participation from the members this year.
Together, stand up to be counted and serve our common objectives.
